The aim is to protect children from various forms of discrimination and political violence that may occur during the electoral process.
KPAI member, Sylvana Maria Apituley, emphasized the importance of implementing a children’s rights perspective in the execution of political agendas. This is crucial because children are vulnerable to exploitation in a political context.

“The government, election organizers, and all members of society must use a children’s rights perspective in exercising rights and political agendas to ensure children are protected from various forms of discrimination and political violence,” said Sylvana in a statement received by the media on Friday, 22 November 2024.

Sylvana also expressed concerns about children being targeted as political objects during the stages of the presidential, legislative, and simultaneous regional elections in 2024. KPAI has noted cases of child exploitation and character assassination involving children as operators of money politics.
“Children who already have the right to vote are often targeted for campaigns and mobilization rather than being treated as Indonesian citizens entitled to political education according to their age and mental development,” Sylvana said.
Furthermore, she ensured that KPAI has dealt with several cases of child exploitation during the 2024 Regional Elections. Six cases were reported directly to KPAI, and 50 cases were identified through social media monitoring.
“KPAI also recorded 108 children involved in protests regarding the Regional Head Election Bill at the House of Representatives building,” she added.
Therefore, Sylvana hopes that the 2024 Regional Elections will proceed with higher quality, free from all forms of discrimination and violence against children.
